So, What's Your Frugal Plans for New Year's?

I looked around on-line to get some ideas for New Years. I really thought about it too late for us. I probably could still round something up, but I think I am going to let it be pretty laid back tonight. We are planning to write a letter about ourselves and plan on opening it in a few years. We are going to predict what things will be like next year. The trick for us is putting the letters in a place where I know where they are and then actually opening them. I believe I will put them in our Christmas decoration box and then we will have them next year when we put them up. The idea came from Family Fun, but they suggested 10 years. I believe that writing the letters and predicting where we will be 10 years from now would be easy enough, but keeping up with letters for 10 years??? You have GOT to be kidding me! You know, thinking about it, We have had a small round band-aid on our refrigerator for five years from when Melanie was born that was on the heel of her foot ( her shots). Hmmmm....maybe tape them to the fridge??? NOT!!!
Besides the letter, we will be watching movies and maybe drinking more elf juice. Ever heard of it? A friend of mine told me about it. You put sprite in a cup with ice (we use wine type glasses) and pour a little marshino cherry juice in it and add cherries along with other fruit if you like. We also use a straw. It's good and the kids LOVE IT!

I was thinking if there was anything that I wanted to work on for the new year. Here's my list.

1. Exercise more
2. Plan earlier for the kid's lessons
3. Do a Beth Moore bible study
4. Do better at keeping in touch with friends and family

New things I did in 2008 and will continue to do.
1. Use our internet for "tv" ....love it and saves us money! Thanks Jennifer R.
2. Use CVS ECBs and combine coupons with sales...wooohoooo!!!! Just today I bought Dukes Mayo for $1.28 :-)
3. Began attending a new church and it's great. We know the Lord has placed us there.
4. Started a ladies ministry
5. Joined a new homeschool support group and co-0p.....now this is really odd...I joined waaaay before I knew we would be moving close to the church where they meet, isn't God awesome?
6. Began cooking more from scratch
7. Blog :-) Thanks again Jennifer

There's probably more, but I can't think of them right now. Well, anyway, I wish everyone a very Happy New Year and try to make it a frugal one, k?

Elf Juice

Take some sprite, add marshino cherry juice, cheeries, fruit, and straws...Great for any time of year. I will just change the name to whatever occasion it is! Last night it was birthday punch and tonight it will be New Year's juice. I'm not very creative with names.

A Little Note

I posted in the wrong order just like someone I know!!! hehe....so, just scroll down and then read the top if you want. :-)

Christmas Day

After a busy and fun Christmas Eve, we had a rough night. Melanie got sick! She was sick during the night and then all day Christmas Day. I felt so bad for her. Everyone else was able to enjoy the day, she did wake up feeling "so so", but that feeling changed to "blah" real quick. Here a few photos that I wanted to share. The first two aren't from Christmas Day, but something just something I wanted to share.

Mel wrapped me a gift, I thought it was so sweet. When we went to PA, Phil saw this shirt but wasn't able to find his size. I was so excited to be able to find it on-line for him. I love it when I can surprise someone!
What does Madison have inside this box? It's the camcorder she asked for!!! She was one happy kid!
Michael....the Lego maniac!
This is a rare moment on Christmas day when Mel was actually smiling. She was excited to get her own tea set (she had been using her sister's set.

A Visit From Little Saint Nick

My dad has a Santa suit and we usually find a use for it at this wonderful time of year. We all went up town on Christmas Eve to wish everyone in "the shoals" a merry Christmas. Michael got to wear the Santa suit and did a GREAT job! He changed his voice, waved, and asked the little ones what they wanted. He was hilarious and we all had an awesome time. It ended up being 8 of us total up town with music blaring. My aunt and Melanie even danced a little to one of the Christmas songs. It was really fun. We then when back to my parents to read the Christmas story, sing carols, and open gifts. What a neat way to spend Christmas Eve.

Some Christmas Fun

Our church has several ministries. I wanted to post a couple of videos. I know they are not of the best quality and for some reason are a litte shaky ( I thought I was holding the camera still). Last Sunday night we all gathered at the church to enjoy watching the kids' black light ministry and the clowns. We have awesome leaders at the church willing to head these ministries up and everyone enjoys it. At the end of the service, the clowns had a birthday cake for Jesus...it was great and a nice way to end it.

Christmas Play

Our church had the Christmas play last Sunday morning and all the kids did so well. It was a great service. I believe all the kids enjoyed being a part of celebrating and honoring Christ's birth. I know the congregation enjoyed it, especially the proud parents.

I'm not sure if this was suppose to be funny, but it was. Mary came riding in on the donkey.

Ladies' Christmas Party

We had our first ladies Christmas Party at our church and these women had a great time. I enjoyed getting the devotion up along with an activity. After the devotion and coloring fun, we ate loads of good homemade food. To my surprise some of the ladies wanted to "boogie down". I had on some nice slow Christmas music and then someone started yelling that they wanted dancing music. I searched around through my cds and discovered a couple of fast Christmas songs ( I was being put on the spot and the women were rushing me). Those ladies KNOW how to dance! We all had good clean fun. It ended up being 29 of us in all. We also revealed our secret sisters too.

The two winners of the coloring contest...they look so proud of themselves, don't they? Two of the ladies letting there true colors shine through...actually it was the older women that wanted to dance anyway!
One of the daughters and moms together...these two can do the bump really well!
Well, what can I say? It just shows that we had a great time!

Cookie Baking

We baked cookies this year a couple of times along with some great breads (recipes came from Family Fun magazine). The girls really enjoy being in the kitchen and cooking. Michael enjoys it only if there isn't something else fun to do. He even chose to be outside most of the time one day to watch Phillip do work on the house. I cheated on the cookie dough and actually bought the kind that is already made, but I did use the cookie icing I had bought really cheap a few months ago using coupons and I believe Bilo had the icing buy 1 get 1 free at the time.

Madison and Mel (don't worry we cloroxed the counter before we got started). finished product ( I got the pictures in the wrong order somehow).
This is Michael making some after most of the fun was over when he finally got too cold outside.

A visit from Santa

Our church had a party for the children last night and was able to get a visit from Santa too! I believe all the children sat on his lap and no one cried! Santa even brought Christmas gifts early, which was a real treat to my kids because they are about to go crazy wanting to open one.

Melanie still says he is not the real Santa because the beard is not real! She wants a gameboy for Christmas just like the big kids! My baby is growing up too fast!!!All Madison asked for was a webkinz...what about the camcorder she has been asking for since hers broke????

Michael asked for a Dodge Charger....and I will quote something that I read the other day....it's just like reading a recipe and when you get to the end you think "well, THAT'S not going to happen."

.....and I asked for my house to be sold...Santa said he could do that!!! Ok Santa, I WILL be waiting!

Another Gymnastic's Meet

We had another great time this past weekend watching Madison! She again walked away with several medals and ribbons for her age group. She has learned so much in the past year. We don't know how long she will be able to continue, but I wanted to share this video. I know it's not great quality, but I will add that I didn't take it.... that counts for something, right?

Sales

I feel I got some really good deals this past week. I hope some of you were able to get some inexpensive items that you needed. My deals were so great, I want to share a couple with you. I do usually look at the sale papers, but the main place I look is the forum section on the hotcouponworld website. Here's my score.

Bilo-to be honest, all I needed was cream from here. The deals were so good though, I couldn't resist. I received over $42.00 worth of groceries for around $14.00. I was able to get 10 containers of Bryers light yogurt for free because I used a $.50 coupon that doubled, 6 pounds of Blue Bonnet light margarine for free ( I did give a couple of these away and I froze the rest), and I bought 8 packs of the Knorr flavored rice dishes for $.40 a piece (makes quick good side dishes for church socials, etc.) I also was able to Del Monte can vegetables for $.30 can due to the sale and having coupons and 5 lb bag Domino sugar for $1.30

Wal-Greens-4 day sale-spend $25.00 and get a $5.00 register reward (this is a $5.00 coupon that you can use for things in the store). I was able to get 4 bottles of arm n hammer laundry detergent with bleach for $2.96. The detergent rang up $6.99 each which totaled up to $27.96, then I used the in-store coupon for $1.99, and out printed the $5.00 register reward. So, I spent $25.00 BEFORE coupons and I was able to get the register reward. At this store, I did spend a little more because they have cute stocking stuffers, toys were 4/$13.98, and I was able to buy a surprise gift for someone too. I was also able to get 3 rolls of reynolds wrap for free because I used their in-store coupon and a manufacturing coupon. OH, I also got about 8 rolls of scotch tape for $2.00 and I will send the receipt in to get all my money back on the rebate!

Food Lion-I took advantage of their 3 day sale and bought 4 whole chickens for $.69 lb., eggs were $.88 cents dozen, and green giant veggies were 3/$1.00 (limit 6). I also got free candy bars because there are having a buy 1 get 1 free sale and I have buy 1 get 1 free coupons. Great gifts for Christmas if you want to give a little something to someone or add to a gift!

Teaching My Children About Christmas

This Christmas season has been great so far. We haven't been really rushed, the tree is up, and crafts have been made. What makes this year different is that I have not committed myself to a lot of things and I started shopping early (on-line baby, on-line). Plus, our list of people to buy for is very short. We are concentrating on homemade treats for teacher gifts(church) and are going to give them out early. This has allowed me to concentrate on teaching the kids the true meaning of Christmas at a steady pace and to be able to have fun with it.

A few years ago I bought an Amanda Benett unit study on Christmas and this year is the first year that I have done it justice. It's a four week study and we are actually on the correct week! I enjoy mixing our school days up a bit. Sometimes I get so involved in the curriculum I purchased that I forget to see what other fun things is out there. I am listing a few things that may be of interest to you for this season of joy.

Click here to see worksheets I found on the Christmas story.

Click here to see the angel ornament we made.

Click here to see the sock snowman.

Click here to see the bookmarks that we hope to make.

If anyone has some good easy ideas for crafts and gifts, let me know. I would love to try them. I have trouble finding unique homemade gifts, but we enjoy making them for people.

UPDATE ON FREE THINGS

I posted a few weeks back about seeing what I could get to be able to give to a shelter or something. So far we have several bottles of shampoo and toothpaste. We also have some glucose monitors. Not too bad, but I was hoping to do better.

Thanksgiving Play and Thankfulness

Our church had a Thanksgiving play with the children. All of the kids did great. The thing is...I forgot that my kids had to dress like Pilgrims. I remembered Saturday night AFTER I was in bed. We were running around Sunday morning trying to figure out what they were going to wear. I ended up cutting some black cloth and pinning it around the waists of Madison and Melanie for skirts. Michael already had black pants (in the washer, so you know I was rushing to get them dried) and a white shirt. Michael also sported the Amish hat that Phillip bought while in PA this year. The girls wore their bonnets they bought while we were on vacation. The play turned out wonderful. I was really thankful the church did the play because the kids have never gotten to participate in a Thanksgiving play and that was one thing I did enjoy when I was young and in school.

Here's the Mayflower and all the Pilgrims arriving from England
My three little Saints, I mean Pilgrims. At least their not Strangers!

The feast with the Pilgrims and Indians. They were very thankful for their paper bag turkey and plastic fruit and veggies....YUM YUM YUM!
There was something funny that happened. The black cloth that I pinned around the girls began the slip off. Madison just pulled her cloth up and held it, but Melanie didn't seem to know what to do. She looked at me as the Mayflower rounded a corner and yelled, "Mama, my thing is coming off!" Once she got on stage she just turned to me and kept looking as if to say, "DO SOMETHING!" I kept mouthing the words, "It's ok." Finally she said, "NO, it's not." She said this in a rather loud voice. I don't think too many people heard it, but it was really funny. Well, it WAS my mistake for not preparing their costumes earlier!
Thanksgiving Day was laid back. We had grandparents over and 1 other friend. The kids took a walk in the woods after dinner. We all ate too much, but the turkey sandwich yesterday was really good!
I am thankful for many things this year. I guess with all the happenings in the past couple of years it has made me more thankful for my family, health, Phillip's job, our church, and most of all the peace that the Lord has given me.

CVS Black Friday Deals

Moneysavingmom has posted on her site all the F R E E deals at CVS for black friday. The GREAT news is that the deals begin tomorrow (THANKSGIVING DAY). There will be lots and lots of free things for free if you already have ECBs. If you don't have any ECBS, you can just buy the items and receive them back and use them on something else. There also are many things that have coupons and you can actually "make money". CVS doesn't really give you any money back, but you can get other things in the transaction and it will help keep the cost down.

A Cooking Day

Melanie is a member of 4-H and she has a project to do. She picked cooking as her project, so for the meeting in December she will have to present her project to the other 4-H members. I decided to go ahead and begin to assist her with her work. We seem to always be busy around here, but we did have a few hours to spare on a cold Saturday afternoon. We took many, many, many pictures of her making peanut butter cookies( I really wanted to post them, but I thought maybe that would be a little boring to you). She also learned some safety rules and was also reminded of many. She already knows a few things in the kitchen due to her helping me often anyway. Once the pictures are printed, she will make a book and each page will be each step that she had to do in order to make the cookies. The steps include her safety tips also. Oh, and I also need to give credit to Madison, she was the one who took most of the pictures of Melanie and did a FANTASTIC job!

Melanie with all the ingredients and utensils when
making yummy easy peanut butter cookies

Melanie and Madison both agree that it's more fun to share what you
bake. Madison really enjoys helping in the kitchen too. She told me she enjoyed cooking better than gymnastics. I couldn't believe it!!

Here's the recipe

Mix

1 cup peanut butter

1 egg

1 cup sugar

Roll into 1 inch balls flatten with a sugared fork. Place in a 400 degree oven and bake 8-10 minutes. By the way, we tried the oven this hot and it works a lot better on 350! Our first batch were a little burned!

A WOMAN OF STRENGTH

A strong woman works out everyday to keep her body in shape...but a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape.

A strong woman isn't afraid of anything...but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear.

A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her...but a woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone.

A strong woman walks surefootedly...but a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls.

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face...but a woman of strength wears grace.

A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey...but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong.

Please pray for all women....let them see the grace in being a woman of strength.

I wanted to share this with all the women in my life today. This was shared in my Sunday School class this morning and I wanted to pass it along.

A Gymnastics Meet

Today Madison had a gymnastic's meet and did very well! This was her second meet. She started a couple of years ago taking gymnastics and the hard work is really paying off. We are so proud of her. We don't stress being THE BEST. We just stress DOING your best and giving it your all. She got a medal and a few awards. Balance Point received their first trophy, YEAH, GO BALANCE POINT!!

BEAM ROUTINE (her best score was on this)
Madison also performed on bars and vault. She did well on these also. I am just really glad she wants to do something like this. I was always so scared of trying things when I was growing up.

A Ladies Mountain Retreat

10 of the ladies from my church went to Helen Ga this past weekend. We had a great time. We really didn't do a lot, but we learned a lot from each other and shared a lot. I don't think I have ever laughed that much in two days. Words can not explain the feelings we had looking out across the mountain and knowing God created it all.

We went to Ana Ruby Falls, but only 4 of us could

HELPING OTHERS

I start thinking about giving this time of year. I do try and help those that are in need during the year if I know about it, but during Thanksgiving and Christmas I tend to seek out people that need some assistance. This year I am more excited about giving because I can give more. Why am I able to give more to others? I have learned to get more with my money using coupons matched with sales. I also have those great Extra Care Bucks from CVS! Yesterday, I was able to get a glucose monitor for free and I will find an organization to donate it to. There are a couple of things I am going to list for this week and where you can get them. It's things that I plan on getting and then donating to an organization. Please consider doing this too. You may not think that it will help alot, but it will. I am going to start this week and see how much I can get in about 6 weeks to donate to an organization near Christmas time. Wish me luck!

REBATES
Wal-Greens and Rite Aid always have rebates. Sometimes you can get all of your money back, especially if you have a coupon to go along with it. At other times, you even make money using coupons once you get the rebate back. I really like the way Rite Aid does their rebates. You just log in to the site, type in your information from the receipt and request your rebate at the end of the month or when you are done getting what rebates they offer for that month. It only takes about 3 weeks to get your money back.

WHERE TO DONATE
homeless shelters
children's homes
churches
women shelters
food banks

Any other ideas?

THE LIST
Rite Aid-kotex maxi pads-free with rebate and use this coupon here to even make $1.00, oral-b toothbrush free after rebate and use the coupon from 9/28 make $.75, Axe shower gel free after rebate, Adidas deoderant free after rebate if you use the coupon from 9/7

CVS- soyjoy bars 4/$4.00 and get back $4.00 ECBs, Bic Comfort Advance Shavers(4pack) use coupons from 9/14 or 10/12 and $4.00 ECBs and you make $1.00, glucose monitor $9.99 and get back $9.99 ECBs.

Michael played football again this year (it's his passion...Lord, help us) and every year they have a Lions Bowl. It's like a real game and they call out the players name etc. During half time they get to walk out on the field with their sponsor. This year Kelsy was his sponsor. They have been best buddies from the very beginning. These 2 kids really love each other. I don't really think in a boyfriend/girlfriend way. It's just a very special relationship. Kelsy doesn't really like to even come to the house unless Michael is here to play with. They have taught each other different things. Michael has taught Kelsy how to play army and I can remember Kelsy teaching Michael how to climb out of the pack n play. They gave granny a run for her money back in the day! It really is bittersweet to watch these two grow up. I hope they will always have a special relationship, everyone needs a buddy....and who knows what might come of it....

Getting back to the Lions Bowl. Some Clemson cheerleaders were there too and all the kiddies really did enjoy that! I don't think it mattered if the kids weren't Clemson fans or not. REAL LIVE CHEERLEADERS......WOW WOW WOW....they almost stole the show!!

1....2......3,4,5 here is Erin and she says, "hi". Erin is Kelsy's sister, and this is a picture of her at the Lions Bowl with her sponsor. They are so cute, makes me just want to squeeze and squeeze them and maybe even pinch their little cheeks. Unfortunately, I don't even remember the little boy's name....oops! Erin cheered this year for the first time and she was AWESOME! I think she was THE BEST cheerleader on the field. She was all smiles and did her best with each cheer that she had to chant. I was really proud of her. All of those little girls are precious, but I must say Erin is my favorite. It wouldn't have anything to do with her being my best bud of all times daughter, would it??? Seriously, on the field you can tell that she really puts her all in to cheering. SHE LOVES IT! GO ERIN...GO ERIN...GO ERIN, ERIN, ERIN!!!

Isn't this just the cutest thing you have ever seen? This is my idea of the home I would have (except it needs a big porch or a deck on the back). I would also want a couple of acres of land to go with it for my CHICKENS that lay eggs (don't laugh, I AM going to get my chickens one day). This is a rental home in Lancaster co. PA. We enjoyed our vacation in PA soooooo much that we are wanting to go back and when we do, I want this house to be where we stay. Some of you know that Charleston, SC is our favorite place to go, well I think maybe Lancaster is moving to the top of the list. It is so peaceful there. There's plenty of stores, etc., but all you have to do is drive just a few hundred feet down any road and you are in the country. I mean real country with rolling hills with cows, and good ole dairy farms....mmmmmmm I miss that wonderful homemade ice cream from Lapps farm. My favorite ice cream now is maple walnut...it is wonderful. You know Marble Slab and Cold Stone has nothing on those guys. I am missing me some Amish ways....maybe we SHOULD have been Amish???? Maybe somewhere down the line we have a little Amish blood in us??? I'm just teasing, but I love that slower pace of life. On second thought, I don't know if it's slower pace they sure do seem to work hard. This is a picture of the field behind the farm and of us eating the wonderful homemade ice cream from Lapp's farm. I included a sign just for the fun of it because I will probably never get around to scrap booking these pictures. I am just in a reminiscing and wishful mood today...

PEACE

I believe the greatest feeling in the world can be that of peace. Have you ever been frustrated, worried, upset, confused, etc. ? I know everyone has been. Think about when you felt good after that feeling. The feeling of...."AHHH". That feeling of KNOWING that everything is alright or KNOWING that it will be alright. Why is it that sometimes we have a hard time of giving our burdens to the Lord? Sometimes I use my faith and then at other times I have to depend on someone using their faith for my trials. I was fine when Phillip lost his job, but when he started his new one I didn't him coming home late. The Lord has really helped me with the feeling of being left alone to do most everything. I KNOW that I am not alone and I am not having to do everything myself (just feels that way sometimes). I have been blessed to have a great husband who has wanted to spend time with his family. He still does, but he doesn't have as much time anymore. We have adjusted for the most part and I know someone must have prayed for me. I wasn't able to pray myself, but the Lord blessed me with PEACE. I want to thank my friends who have prayed for me and listened to me complain! Thanks friends!

Medicine Anyone?

I noticed there are alot of rebates for medicine at Rite Aid this week. So, if you need some medicine for the upcoming winter months it would be a great time to buy them. There rebate program is really simple. Once you buy the items, create an account on-line and type in the required information from the receipt. Once you request the money it only takes 2-3 weeks to get it back!

What I Am Going To Do

I thought I would post my challenge to myself here. I have been thinking, but not really trying to eat healthier. I lost a few pounds last year and have managed to gain a few back. I DON"T WANT TO DO THAT! So, starting today I am going to try not to eat any sweet things (candy, cookies, cake, etc) and walk 30 minutes at least 3 times this week. The walking will probably be the hardest thing to do. Maybe I can get the kids to walk with me or take them to the park while I walk around the track. Wish me luck and I will post how I am doing!

Monday-did great! No sweets
Tues-good day again!
Wed-no sweets, but I did snack...:-(
Thurs-M&Ms
Fri-did ok
Sat-snacked on chips and salsa

Well, I didn't do as good as I wanted, but I think I did lose about 1 pound. That's better than nothing (probably water weight..haha)

MEL TURNS 5

Melanie wanted a cat party, so that is what she got! She turned 5 on Sept.12, but we didn't have her party until this past weekend. She kept saying she wanted to make a cat mask for her party and so it ended up being a cat party. You know, we never did finish the cat mask. She invited 3 friends over to spend the night and she allowed Madison to have a buddy also :-) Michael decided he wanted to spend the night with grandparents (thank you grandparents). The girls played and lights out were right after 10:00 and believe it or not they went to sleep! The next morning we went to Balance Point Gymnastics center for a party with more of her friends. I believe everyone had a wonderful time. I believe the person that had the BEST time was Phillip. He was sore for a few days after the party because he decided he was going to turn flips in to the foam pit. I made sure I reminded him he was close to 40 and not 5 anymore...hahaha...what fun...you know we never ever truly grow up, do we? I think men enjoy life more than woman anyway. They seem to live in the moment more than women do. Well, don't go jumping on me about my opinion...maybe it's just that way in our household???

A MUCH NEEDED FIELD TRIP

I had a very stressful and busy week last week and the beginning of this one didn't seem to be any better. What I ended up doing was taking a step back from schooling the kids. Oh, we have been doing some school this week, but I decided not to push myself or them like I have been since school started. I decided they could do English and Math with a little more here and there. Then a really GREAT idea hit me. We decided to load up Tuesday and head to Sky Top Apple Orchard. It was the best trip we have ever had. The weather was great and the apples were plentiful. It was worth the gas money that was spent. We had such a great time, we are thinking about making another trip. We bought 1 bushel of apples and it seems that it's not going to be near enough for what I want to do. Here are a few pictures of the kids having a great time. They don't look too thrilled in this first one, do they? Believe me we all had a wonderful time!
